Senior Scientist I/II, Biostatistics

With the world’s largest database of more than fifteen million genotyped customers, 23andMe is at the forefront of using human genetics to advance biomedical research and transform healthcare. The Genetic Epidemiology team works on developing the methodology and infrastructure that would enable rigorous use of real-world phenotypic data in support of our company mission. We are looking for a statistician/data scientist to provide technical and computational expertise on a variety of projects involving wearables data, electronic health records (EHR), and self-reported survey data.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide guidance and hands-on support with real world data management and analysis (real world data can include EHRs, claims, wearables, questionnaires, imaging data, etc.)
  • Define and validate health-related phenotypes from both structured and unstructured data
  • Leverage EHRs and other real world data in support of consumer product and data partnerships, including but not limited to validating data from other sources and creating predictive models 
  • Interface with our Data Collection and Bioinformatics teams to create data workflows that integrate diverse data types with genetic data
  • Present your findings to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Mentor junior analysts on best practices in real world evidence analysis

 

What You’ll Bring

Leveling (Senior Scientist I/II) will depend on experience.

  • Scientific and Technical Expertise
    • PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science or related disciplines with at least 5 years of experience post-PhD, or Master’s in a related field with at least 8 years of experience post-Master’s 
    • Hands-on experience with real world data, especially EHR
    • Experience with longitudinal and/or predictive modeling
    • Proficiency in R and/or Python; comfortable with Linux/ bash
    • Practical knowledge of common machine learning approaches is recommended
    • Foundational knowledge and/or strong interest in genetic determinants of disease are a plus
    • Strong familiarity with EHR landscape and underlying data structures. Experience of analysis combining EHR data with genetics would be a strong plus.
  • Leadership Skills
    • Ability to establish and maintain key relationships with internal and external stakeholders
    • Ability to lead directly and by influence, including strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
    • Experience mentoring junior scientists and coaching them to success
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and empathetically with both scientific and non-scientific audiences.

Pay Transparency
23andMe takes a market-based approach to pay, and amounts will vary depending on your geographic location. The salary range reflected here is for a candidate based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
San Francisco Bay Area Base Pay Range
Sr. Scientist I: $168,000 - $252,000
Sr. Scientist II: $184,000 - $276,000
